Built in 1927 and completed in 1928 KAAPOKO tunnel is 3558 feet long (almost 7/10ths of a mile). The tunnel connects Kaapoko valley with Hanalei valley. At places it becomes waist deep and appears treacherous at points within. At about the half way point there had been a collapse but all appearances indicated that it had occurred quite some time ago.
